Controlled Specific Learning Objectives

Abstract

We describe how Controlled Language principles are used within an algorithm for pre-processing source documents before they are operated upon by a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Item generator (Ref 1). The inputs to the algorithm are training course objectives and associated paragraphs from a UK company policy. The output is a list of suggested formal statements of the policy writer's aims, which we call 'Controlled Specific Learning Objectives' (CSLOs). We illustrate the application of the method using existing training course objectives and associated policy document paragraphs from a UK company. These source documents are transformed to ensure they conform to the definition of ‘Specific Learning Objectives’ (ref Criterion Referenced Instruction Theory - R.Mager (Ref 2). The study also makes reference to the levels within the Cognitive Domain of Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning (Ref 3) and the AECMA Simplified English Controlled Language (Ref 4)
